Salon Review (Women): Happy In The Head, Bandra

Last weekend, I had a soiree to attend and I hadn’t had a great haircut in months. I thought it was time my locks got some snogging with a pair of scissors and I have been wanting to try this place called Happy in the Head for a while now. So I made an appointment and here’s how the entire experience went. I must pepper you with a little information first. Avani, who owns this place is ex Mad O Wat and has that same quirky vein run through her. Or that’s what I assume. The Space It’s a tiny little cubbyhole tucked into a lane in Bandra. The lane in question though is home to 3 of the major colleges in Bandra so it’s not quiet. Also, I found it really peculiar that there’s more place outside the salon than in it. And when I reached, I was greeted my various women (clients) pottering around outside with foils in their hair. I imagine like baking in makeup? Baking your hair must be a thing …

Hair Service Review: Nalini’s of Nalini and Yasmin, Bandra

About 10 years ago, when hairstyling wasn’t exactly cool Nalini and Yasmin were the rockstars of the hair world. A lot of time was spent trying to get an appointment at this Bandra salon and the cool people there- the ones with weird hair and nose piercings (that’s how we knew they were cool back then)- were spotted milling about here. For me, at that time, it was the epitome of coolness. Since then, I got a nose piercing but I am nowhere close to cool so, yeah. When a friend, Neha Doshi, recently asked me where she should go to get her hair trimmed I suggested going to this old school favourite. Now, it’s called Nalini’s. I don’t know why? What happened to Yasmin? Are they still friends? Is there something sinister here? And it is because I do this that I am being kept away from detective novels. Anyway, so Neha booked an appointment and the both of made our way to this place which is exactly where N&Y used to be. Except …

Update: Makeup Revolution launches store in Mumbai. A Hilarious account of the opening.

Makeup Revolution London has been this underrated brand that has quietly snuck up on us. We were sitting here gathering money by selling our kidneys to buy makeup and suddenly, this new kid on the block comes around. It was cheaper. Much , much cheaper and had very good products. Well, atleast some of them were very good products. ¬†Their blush palette in Golden Sugar ? OMG. I gush about it here:¬†https://damselindestress.in/2016/05/02/product-review-makeup-revolution-london-ultra-blush-palette-in-golden-sugar/ So when I got a message on Tuesday about them opening up a physical store, I lost my marbles. I was like, yeah baby, bring it on. I got a message about how they were inviting me to the exclusive launch of their flagship store. I was excited. I replied to that message saying I was in and that I would want to take videos and pictures and all that. When there was silence from the other end, I called the number and made conversation about me wanting to be there. A sleepy lady told me ,’Great, she would see me there’ and …

Skin Service Review (Women): Skin Story, Bandra West

You know how I have sworn off facials right? I just give my face a good clean with my Clarisonic every night. But the brother’s wedding was coming and I thought I would give one a go. I had read about the Skin Story in another story and they are supposed to have artisanal facials, so I thought this would be the kind of place I should give a whirl. It looked like a nice place. It seemed like the kind of place where the lady doing my facial wouldn’t have fingers smelling of gobi or wasn’t auditioning for a role in a utensil cleaning equipment commercial and didn’t want to scrub my face off . So, this is the story of Skin Story. The Space The Skin Story is easily missable. It sits atop some shops and if you aren’t looking for it, you’ll probably drive past it a couple of times before you give up and ask for directions. It’s only appropriate that there’s a eye care place below it, because it can test …

Hair Service Review (Women): A’Kreations, Bandra

I am here with another review. Of a place that seems like it has been named by Ekta Kapoor or a particularly zealous fan of hers. I don’t know if you’ve have heard of this place but the name had been cropping up in various places I was seeing and I thought it was time the Damsel took note and wrote a review. Now, it’s in a pretty fabulous place- it’s housed in the same building as the legendary Nalini and Yasmin salon- and I was expcting fabulous things. I have so much to tell you. Grab some tea and let’s get on with the review. The Space Because it is this uber cool building, I was expecting it to be pretty spacious. It’s not. The space feels extremely cramped and their design adds to the feeling of tiny. The place is done up in tones of brown and deep brown but not all of it is pleasing to the eye. They have jammed the nail services, about 8 hair service stations and a lounge …

Hair Service Review (Women): Savio John Pereira, Bandra

It’s been a while since I did a salon review. Makes you think I haven’t been going to salons, huh? Okay, that is partially true. There are salons mushrooming up everywhere and it’s really worrying because well, the standards of service are average in many. Anyway, I found Dr. Ekta Bhatia who was looking for a haircut and was willing to put the appointment taking, the salon researching and more into my very able hands. So here’s a before picture. Ekta is a physiotherapist and wanted a fuss free hairstyle. What are we reviewing today? The Savio John Pereira Salon in Bandra. It’s located next to The Bagel Shop. And there’s one itsy bitsy sign telling you it’s there. I wasn’t expecting much but I was surprised with the space the salon had. I’ll tell you all about it in the review. Come. The Space I don’t know if it’s just me but I have a soft spot for these old Bandra bungalows. You know with the shuttered windows and slanted roofs. Savio’s salon is …

Hair & Nail Service Review: Freeda Beauty Salon, Bandra

Everyone who’s been in Bandra long enough knows about Freeda. It’s supposed to be one of those places that has acquired cult status. Like people visit it every month or so like a pilgrimage spot but for beauty needs. Can I already tell you this now? I have no idea why. I have noticed that salons now have their employees sitting outside when they have no client to service. I find this quite silly and unwelcoming. But with Freeda, I am going to excuse this. Purely because they have way too many employees. There are employees everywhere. And their uniform is red and black, so basically it just looks like many Coke bottles are walking around. Anyway, on to the review. The Space I haven’t gone to the previous Freeda but this one is obviously new. A lot of things are still to be set up and the place looks like it is in a bit of a disarray. No idea if things are like this generally. It’s located somewhere on Pali Hill (I can …
