I have been wanting to review The Home Salon for a while now. I read an interview of the founder and owner of this service and she sounded good. I lie a little. She said that they make sure they take of the tiny things and have their service with candles and stuff and I was sold on that. Yes, I am awfully easy to please.

Also, I am headed to Manali for a two week trip-eeee, so excited and I needed to look spiffy for the locals there. Coz who doesn’t love a plump, waxed and threaded woman from Mumbai up in the hills, right? Maybe they don’t notice the hair but I wasn’t taking any chances. So I went to THS website and booked an appointment there. Here’s a review.

The Space

Oh come on, it’s a home salon service. My home is very pretty, okay?

The Service

Ooh. They faltered. I went to the website and made the booking. The booking said I would receive a call from a particular number. I did. But the people who made the call hadn’t confirmed the appointment. They only called to ask if I had booked an appointment. To which I said yes and then they said they would call me back. But they forgot all about me. So when I decided I needed to be waxed today, I called them back and asked if the appointment was on. The lady said she would call me back. She didn’t. Then I got an email saying my booking was confirmed. I was very confused. Or as confused as you can be when you don’t know if you are going to get hurt by a waxing strip or not. Anyway, this morning  they called again and said the appointment was confirmed was 11am. I remember booking it for 11:30am. I wasn’t going to complain. Hey, I was getting it done and at home. I shouldn’t have worried though, the lady was nowhere near my place by 11. She arrived by 11:40. The good thing? They only call from one number so you know it’s them.

The Experience

A visibly hassled Meenakshi (she called for directions and handed the rickshawala the phone almost every single time) came home with a giant blue bag and one more bag that she was lugging on her shoulders. You may know that I don’t appreciate the carrying of blue plastic bags that looks like you are trying to dispose off a body. Anyhoo, I was getting waxed so I wanted to get it done with as soon as possible. I must mention here that Meenakshi was extremely hygienic and clean. She laid out all the products on a newspaper (she asked me for it), gave me a disposable gown, spread a disposable sheet on the bed and got cracking. Though slow, she was thorough.

Spot the blue plastic bag.

I got a manicure and pedicure done as well. This is where there were tiny glitches. The product were clean but unbranded. When she sloughed off the dead skin from my feet, she washed the product in the same water- the water my feet were soaking in. That was a bit , not cool.

This was used for the mani and pedi. Didn’t smell like aromatherapy to me.

Hygiene of salon and professional: Clean and quite nice.

Destress Quotient: 4 AAHs

Verdict: I did like the service provided but as mentioned, there were a few glitches. Confirming the appointment might be a good idea in the first call. Also, they called her while she was with me and they had a bit of a showdown – they asked her to keep her phone on silent and then complained when she wouldn’t take calls- and that doesn’t look very professional. I would like to see better brands though. Also, a little quicker. The whole thing took about 3 hours.

Therapists name: Meenakshi
