6 Questions Every Indian Bride Should Ask Her Makeup Artist

Everyone will have you believe that if you are a girl, you spend a good part of your childhood planning your wedding. Some people do and some people don’t.Whatever the case is, I must admit that being a bride is fun. You get to buy new clothes, jewellery and stuff you don’t need and will never use because , well, you are the bride.

But being a bride also comes with a lot of stress. And it can get overwhelming. Looking perfect for the pictures is probably one of the things the bride is most worried about. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Now, I have attended plenty of weddings and here are a few things that I think an Indian bride should ask her makeup artist. And these aren’t the usual ones but stuff that happens in real life and somethings you probably haven’t accounted for.

1.Is he/she going to be doing your makeup?

You book a makeup artist and if it’s someone of repute, you think you are sorted, right? Wrong. There are many makeup artists out there (the ones that are super popular and charge you a limb) that come in, do the base and then have their entourage finish it up. Or those who come in, have their assistants do the base and do the eyes and lips and finish it off. Make sure you have asked your makeup artist this question. The hair is usually done by the assistant but the person is there to add with finishing touches.

2. How much time will he/she take?

Here’s what you want to consider: what look you are going for, what you are going to be wearing and what occasion it is. Wedding makeup obviously takes the longest. But ask and then add 15-20 minutes to it so when people ask you for a schedule, you can account for this time. Also, if you have any shoots happening (the pre-wedding etc.) ensure you have told the person that you would want makeup for this and what you want to look like – let her/him know if there’s a theme as well.

3. Accessories, will she/he have any?

You obviously will have your jewellery and bangles and what not. But it’s the tiny things you might miss out on. For example, for your hair, if you want something glittery or something that goes with your outfit, you may have forgotten it or end up being unhappy with your choice at that point. Most artists will have some accessories that are pretty versatile so ask them if they could carry some of these with them. You’ll be surprised how many times bindis are the ones that are missing.

4. What does she need?gallery_big_too_much_face_powder

It doesn’t seem like it but makeup artists can be a whimsical bunch. Ask them if they need something in particular and if you can have other people around. I recently went to a wedding where the makeup artist would get annoyed if there was too much noise. So yeah, make sure temperaments match. If you would prefer having your best friend around, make this clear to him/her and expect him to behave.

5. Talk money.

You will obviously discuss how much the person will charge but ensure you discuss the smaller details as well. For example, if you want fake lashes- some might not be carrying them and might charge for these. If you’re having a destination wedding, discuss where they will stay and where they will have their meals. You don’t want them to venture too far. By the way, if you are getting dressed at a salon, and you’ve to go there, they usually throw in a bunch of freebies, so take advantage of those. Like a friend who had chosen an airbrush makeup package managed to get my hair done for free.

Most importantly,

6. What if I don’t like it?

Not all makeup artists will give you a trial and you won’t always be able to schedule a pre-wedding appointment with him/her. But always ask what he/she will do if you don’t like the makeup. Of course, they will say that won’t happen. But it could. Ask them what their backup plan would be. You know, just in case.

So you know, always discuss your hair and makeup looks in advance, it will give both of you a chance to be prepared. Browse through Pinterest, wedding websites and more so you know your options.

Carry your own nail polishes and ask your makeup artist to apply those. Some won’t apply them, so always ask.

You will want to carry tweezers. Just in case an errant hair decides to make an appearance.

Arrange for lots of safety pins. You’ll be surprised how much you will need these.

  1. I didn’t know about these, neither did I ask these 4 years back when I got married. I’ll pass it on to my single friends however
